- "Avarice" explores three different generations living together in a household. "True Artist" is very much about one generation. How does this difference limit (or not) ea. story?
- Corine, the narrator's former daughter-in-law in "Avarice" is insane. You could argue that "True Artist" is also about seeing the world in a different way. The narrator can't explain why Cam&Lo is popular to her parents, she expresses her emotions and physical rxns verbally ("exasperated sigh," "shakes head"). What do these stories say about the way we perceive reality?
- The word "avarice" means greed. How are both stories about greed?
Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 102 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

"The Story of a True Artist" and "Avarice"
I'd like us to try and make connections between the stories this week. Some questions to consider:

With three generations in "Avarice" we get to view different perspectives than viewing "True Artist" with only one generation. In "True Artist" Cam decides to leave the YouTube channel after they receive the taco bell money and not consulting with Lo, seems like greed to me. "Avarice" shows greed when Jeremey talks about the killing of elephants and the narrator says "It's the avarice, another word for greed".
ReplyDeleteAvarice" and "True Artist" the characters are completely different. The only thing I believe they share is both main characters mentally loose there minds. In "Avarice" its more violence and greed. And in "True Artist" Cam looses her mind by loosing dignity for herself. Because she finally gets famous but in the wrong way. By screaming and shouting that he was her biggest fan after she was betrayed.
ReplyDeleteBoth stories are told in first person, something I believe made the writing more real. In “True Artist”, we are told the story in the eyes of a teenager. We see her desire to be famous in an almost rather exaggerated way. We also see her families problems. Though it’s told in her perspective I truly believe telling it in another way would not give the story the realism it has. We are brought into the mind of a teenager as she goes through her conflicts and we even get a deeper aspect by reading what she is thinking of.
ReplyDeleteIn “Avarice”, we get taken on the mental collapse of a women grieving from the death of her husband. The only perspective that would’ve mattered to the reader is from hers. It allows the reader to literally read how this life changing event destroys her from within, making her go from a Christian women into someone who is capable of murdering someone out of revenge. Both stories if told in another perspective would not have left the same impact on readers.
First person narrator is significant in both stories because it force us to see only one point of view. In “The Story Of A True Artist” she is telling how she is the victim of the story and how her life is unfair. Like what you stated she was exaggerated. On the other hand, In “Avarice”, Dolores is saying how she is a good person, how she cares for her mentally ill former daughter in law, and how people around her are selfish and greedy unlike her as a first person perceptive. But what I think is she seems to be Christian and caring, but really she wants reward for her actions without knowing it.

ReplyDeleteIn “Avarice”, we get taken on the mental collapse of a women grieving from the death of her husband.
In " true artist" a teenage want to get famous, she did get famous but in wrong way.
i would say the narrators of avarice and true artist have some similarities and differences. In avarice the narrator seems to still be grieving. she seems to not have moved on since the death of her husband which is understandable from the way he was killed.she seems to be very angry which i think might be the reason she thinks of murder she is hiding all of these emotions from people.
ReplyDeletein true artist the the narrator wants to be famous and she is also very angry because her friend turned his back on her and left their you tube videos i felt like she kind of had much more desire to be famous when this happened to he. she wanted to be better than cam who walked away from their you tube videos just when she thought they might be going somewhere with it.
Both the stories are different from each other in "True Artist" is the story about a girl who has dream for becoming famous, it shows what teenage can do to get famous like her choosing wrong path.
ReplyDeleteand "Avarice" is little different from "True Artist" because in this story it shows how death of your love one can change your life.

ReplyDeleteIn "Avarice" the protagonist mentions and explains the meaning avarice twice throughout the story. The first one was “she must have loved her things, as we all do. God has a name for this love: avarice” and the second time is when she tells her grandson. The irony of this, is like she seems to understand and familiar with the definition of avarice. She uses it to describe others. Unknowingly deep down she also want have greed. She believes she’s about to die so she does good as a reward. She points finger on how people around her are bed, greedy but she doesn’t know she is also one of them.
ReplyDelete“The Story Of A True Artist” has a similar idea with "Avarice". She is greed for fame but she is not doing anything. She blames Cam for leaving, blames live is not fair for her being poor and Cam is rich. Saying how no one on earth can be an artist if they have no money. At the end she cries like crazy in from of people and cameras to revenge cam, it’s like that was the only way to be famous. Getting attention instead doing art. While she was doing YouTube with Cam, she should have learned anything from him. But no, she does not even know how to do the basic baby step of Youtubing (videoing, editing, uploading)
Both stories are different yet similar. In Avarice it expressed how the death of your love one can change you while in The Story Of A True Artist the protagonist craves for lots of fame and does everything she can to become famous. Both stories the characters had lost someone. In Avarice she was suffering the lost of her husband and in The Story Of A true Artist Cam left Lo and went solo.
ReplyDelete“Avarice” and “the story of a true artist” main characters are completely different. In “Avarice” once she thought she had cancer she basically gave up on life. She just excepted it and wasn’t trying to fight it all. She just gave on life. In “the story of a true artist” when she got the news that Cam left she didn’t just stop right there. She made serval attempts to get what she wanted which was famous. She was determined to get it with or without him. She didn’t just quit even though she didn’t know much about it.
ReplyDeleteIn both stories "Avarice" & "The story of a true artist" are the way of thoughts, emotions and expressions which produced in different circumstances and share it in a wrong way but that psychological stress seen after some changes and observations which distract the theme of fiction. Violence was the objective in Avarice but due to his kid safety, narrator isolate her emotions which always pin her in her thoughts while love, honor and life style could unbalance the concept of self respect of the narrator of " The story of true artist".
