After seeing She Eats Apples, after our courtroom exercise in class, what is your final opinion about Ben's guilt. Did he rape Ashley? Is he innocent? Tell us how you reached your conclusion. (And feel free to disagree and/or debate w/ your classmates' arguments.)
Also, this is the last artwork in the show:
Why? How is this different than the other artworks, if at all? Pablo Picasso painted this paining. In fact, all the artworks were painted by men. Is this significant or not?

I think Ben raped Ashley. If we were to consider the whole play, even the ending where Ben forces Ashley to eat the apple then this is even more evidence of Ben raping Ashley. When Ben thought that Ashley brought a condom for sex; he went to assume that Ashley wanted sex and got on top of her before Ashley can act. I don't think this painting is any different from the other ones expect that they're altogether naked. The one painting we did see was that one girl laying down striking a pose, naked. Being that all of these paintings were by men, I feel like this is very significant. Out of all the paintings none were painted by men; which is a bit weird if you ask me.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Elvis. I believe Ben did not rape Ashley. The whole incident was not a conventional rape but rather labeled rape due to lack of words. I personally feel like it was a great misunderstanding among the two. No one can really say if it was rape or not. Ashley herself said she wanted to do it. One can argue saying that she had not even considered it was rape until Evelyn suggested it. Ashley even accepted the great symbol of the apple from Ben's hands. She even mentioned sex first and prior to even going to the lake, she admitted to Lily to wanting to have sex with Ben. Granted Ben also made some mistakes. He should have never been aggressive, never should have assumed, and he should have asked before doing anything. Regardless, it was the first time to both young teenagers who did not know what they were doing. It can be best described as a great miscommunication, not necessarily rape, due to the lack of malicious intentions)
ReplyDeleteDuring the courtroom exercise in class I had to say I totally disagree with Trevor’s personality. I’m not saying the students acted as Trevor wrong but the whole idea of Trevor’s identity is. He is a douche and playboy. He is a guy who does not give a crap about anything but for himself. We can see how he treats people around and the way he talks about girls. However, he has pride in him. He has a sexual relationship going on with Lily so he influences Ben to have sex with Ashley. Purely because he thinks it's cool. Although he seems a loser but he’ll stand up for himself and for what he thinks. Thus, in the courtroom, Trevor won’t act stupid. I believe he will never say anything like “uhh.. I don’t know, dude” he’ll be more like standing around pointing and showing his middle finger everywhere, he’ll say something like “girls are horny too, of course they all wanted it” “It’s an opportunity, it cannot be missed,” “go for it and show her who’s the man!” this is the Trevor I know based how the play illustrated.
ReplyDeleteI think Ben didn’t rape Ashley. In the scene where they were at the lake, the environment, situation, people and setting basically everything were giving way for both Ben and Ashley to have sex at that moment. Even Ashley knew that. They both consent by kissing each other. At one point, both Ben and Ashley didn’t do it right, Ben pressures her but all she did to stop Ben was saying “I don’t” and her body language didn’t have any resistance enough to show Ben or me that she doesn’t want it. It is more of she realizes her first time was not perfect are less than her expectation. She then comes up with a conclusion of she got rape after talking to Evelyn.
I agree to this statement that it was the fault of both. It was not indicate as rape because the afterward behavior of Ashley who involved again in sex as after the claim of rape with Ben. She supposed herself as innocent but she is not perfect for right of dignity and abuse due to her unnatural behavior with Ben.Therefore Ben has a positive point to keep his self clean as his gender domination.
ReplyDeleteAfter having the courtroom exercise it helped me understand and visualize even more on who is guilty or innocent whether it was Ashley or Ben. I have came to the conclusion that the way that our court system is set up makes it very difficult to analyze specific cases like those. Since it does not take into account the ones who are in true fault here, which seems to start with the way we have constructed this society, affecting how our gender roles, self identification, morality, communication comes into play. Thus affecting and creating problems like the ones we have today. The system only seems to put blame onto who committed the action but not to who is the source of it all. It only point fingers but not to itself. So if we look at all the factors we could even see that the teacher is to blame for not acknowledging what was going on in the classroom environment. Nobody was conscious of what was leading to there being a rape throughout the whole play not even the person who committed the rape. That tells me that there is something wrong with our society/structured government and the way that our court system is set up, because if your able to put into prison a person who was not conscious of his actions, then mind as well put all the people who led to the construction of the distortion on gender roles, self identification, morality, and communication that tend to advertise and make profit of the people who are not able to even recognize when they are being raped or committing an action of rape.
ReplyDeleteSo in conclusion I feel as Ben is innocent because if he gets imprisoned for his actions all of the people who consciously and unconsciously led to the thoughts and behavior to the society we have today should also be imprisoned, because at the end of the day it comes down to the point where ignorance is bliss
While it's true that both Ben and Ashley are at fault, I think that Ben technically did rape her. There was a lot of miscommunication, and that was the downfall of this case. While Ashley admitted to both wanting AND not wanting to have this kind of relationship with Ben, what matters is what she actually said to Ben. At the lake, she clearly tries to resist his moving on her. Before she's fed the apple, she tries to go home before being peer-pressured by Ben into staying.
ReplyDeleteI agree, couldn't have said it any better than that. Ben was forceful towards Ashley. And yes, there was a lot of miscommunication between both characters but Ben was the dominant one.
DeleteYes Ben raped Ashley. I don’t think that was his intention but it still was rape. I believe that since everyone make assumptions and feel it’s a part of a relationship that’s where all the confusion comes in. Even though Ashley didn’t want it she was confused about what took place because he was her boyfriend, and eventually it was going to happen. Ben felt that it was his girlfriend and she had a condom so that gave him the green light. Weather or not you with someone or not, or if you had sex a 1000 times before it rape if the other person doesn’t want it.
ReplyDeleteBen forced himself on Ashley. Not giving her a chance to react. He knew that she was uncomfortable but went along with it anyway. People blaming her for being there but no one ask to be raped. Even though she has a condom doesn’t mean anything. We all carry things that we don’t use, or have just Incase.
Well said. Ashley was carrying the condom for safety reasons, not to have sex right away. I felt like she did want sex but when it was the right time to have it. Ben asserted himself way to fast on her; which is one of the reasons why I say Ben raped Ashley.
Deletei agree with Tyesha. Ben did rape Ashley even though that might have not been what he wanted to do but he did anyway. yes there was lack of communication between the both of them and i would say that is mostly on Bens part because he made the first move. Approached her first and he should have asked if she was okay with it.
DeleteI think Ashley did not say anything because Ben did not give her a chance to. He got caught in the moment and didn't stop to to ask if she was okay. If he had asked her she might have said "No" and he wouldn't be in the situation that he ended up in.
After reading and watching the play I don't think Ben rape Ashley. As we know they both are teenager and there were more physical attracted to each other and there were some misunderstanding between Ben and Ashley. In a play I didn't see Ashley stooping Ben or asking anyone for help. If it was rape Ashley should have fight back or shout for help as victim is supposed to do and she didn't. Nor she case a file against Ben. So I don't think Ben rape Ashley.
ReplyDeleteBecause I think the responsibility was on Ben, he was the "aggressor" and pursued her when she didn't want to engage in anything sexual, he is guilty of taking advantage of her.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading and watching the play it was clear to me that Ben did rape Ashley especially when she was saying DONT and he continued to shove it into her. he also never asked her if she wanted to do it at that moment. Just because Ben didn't think he raped her by law he did him not knowing something doesn't change the fact that he raped her.
