Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 102 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

Readings
Since this week isn't a complete seven days, any entries you do on the blog will be extra credit. Feel free to respond to Tuesday's readings. Give a shout out to any of your classmates if you enjoyed their work. Or share what it was like to read your own work out loud. You may also discuss your reaction to seeing She Eats Apples at QCC. What did you think of the school's interpretation of the play? Accurate? What would you have done differently?

I wish the dialogue of the play could've been a bit different than the script. The actors went word for word, I thought they would change some words around or better yet give us something new. Other than that, I think the play was accurate. The play gave me a better visual interpretation on it than trying to read the play and picture it myself.
ReplyDeleteI was kind of thinking the opposite because it seemed like the play was was clearer in the director's interpretation of the events by the lake. I tend to read it as high school confusion and inexperience between people that had feelings for each other. I didn't think Ben had the intentions of sexually assaulting her, I think he had the intentions of taking the relationship to the logical next level. But because of Ashley's hesitation, she later feels as if she was not ready and did not want to so she concluded that it was rape. I think there are too many unanswered questions for an accusation such as rape. When Ashley is questioned if she screamed, that is an irrelevant question and everyone reacts differently. However, the fact that she denied a rape kit test and did not want to press charges or go to court gives me reasons to doubt that it was an aggravated sexual assault, rape. If this play seeks to define what rape is, it maybe did a great job is showing that the lines are blurry and men should be more sensitive, or it did a bad job in not saying definitively that it was rape for x reasons and the audience should take this lesson with you into your relationship.
ReplyDeleteI think the school's interpretation of the play is great and accurate. I like the setting with apples floating on the water. I like it the way it is. One thing that I don't like in the play was the actress that played Ashley. I could not understand her, she talked too fast and I don't really hear her.
ReplyDeleteI like what we did in class, reading out parts of the collection. But it'll be even better if I could read the whole collection. I only read my group member's work (which they are great by the way.)
I think the schools interpretation was good and made it really clear that ben did rape her. I also really liked the setting of the apples floating in the water and i think even though girl two had portrayed many characters she played all of them perfectly especially when she was playing trevor
